2026 Goals

Another year, another set of goals. These goals are largely the same as my goals in 2025, as I don't plan on being too ambitious. Of course, I'll end up adjusting things if I need to.

Read 36 books.
Since I was able to read 32 books just from May to December of 2025, I think this is a pretty reasonable goal. I still have a physical backlog of 15 books, and that will certainly grow as the year progresses and the local bookstores have holiday sales.

At least 12 of those books need to be ebooks. My ebook backlog is approaching 40 books – it might be higher, as I haven't actually checked the number – and I want to read at least one per month. Given that a lot of those ebooks are comics, this could be a goal I complete early on and end up increasing.

Read 100 short stories. Nothing much to say about this goal. I'm still subscribed to a lot of SFFH magazines and read them as they come out…or, at least, I try to.

Complete 6 new video games. There's at least one new game coming out in 2026 that I am definitely going to play on release (Control Resonant). As for the other five? I'm not sure what they will be.

Watch 12 movies. One or two movies per month really seems to be my limit. I doubt I'll be exceeding this goal by too much, especially since that I'm watching Critical Role again and each episode is basically the length of two entire movies.

Leave 100 comments. I am actually somehow becoming more social online, and I want to continue with that.

Create 12 pieces of art. One piece per month. One. I can do that, right? I think? I hope?

Write 100,000 words. I wrote more in 2025 than in 2024, but I didn't reach 100k. Since I'm actually working on a story project again, I'm hoping I can actually reach this goal in 2026.

Write 52 blog posts. I want to have a least one post on this blog each week, whether it's an update on my writing progress, a review, my thoughts on various things, or something else.

2025 in Review

My goals for 2025 were pretty simple. Some of them were easy enough that I updated them, and others were never reached in the first place.

Read 100 short stories. In total, I ended up reading 160 short stories. I actually hit 100 back in July and then slowed down a bit to focus on novels.

Read 12 books. I increased this goal twice, and ended the year at 32 – exceeding my final goal of 30! I genuinely never thought I'd be able to read this number of books in a year as an adult.

Watch 12 movies. I achieved this goal in August and increased it twice – first to 15, then to 20. I hit 20 in October and ended the year at 24 movies.

Complete 6 new video games. I only completed one, which was Horizon Forbidden West. Quite a change from 2024, where I actually did play six games.

Leave 100 comments. Achieved toward the very end of the year, but I did it! I did better than the previous year!

Write a total of 100,000 words. This did not happen. I didn't even get close. I ended the year at 78,042, which is more than I wrote in 2024, so there actually was some improvement.

Write 1 blog post per week. I did almost double and wrote 101.

Create 26 pieces of art. I did barely half of this. 2025 was not a good year for art.

--

I wrote quite a few reviews, including of books and television, which I hadn't done before. Here are all of them, listed in order of posting:

I also started a new conlang (À‹llunóñe)! And then I abandoned it, because it's linked to a story project I'm not currently working on right now.  It still felt pretty good to get back into conlanging, at least for a little bit. Those are muscles I haven't stretched in a while.

And then, in November, I took part in Pillowrimo, to start and hopefully finish the outline of a story. That outline was finished in the first week of December, and to my surprise, I didn't hate it. I'm still focusing on outlining the two sequel parts to that story, but it's something I'm actually looking forward to writing.

There's less than a month left in the year and there's still a ton of things I want to get done so I don't bring them into 2026. Some of them are related to my personal life, but I'm only going to focus on media and writing-related stuff here because that's mostly what this blog is about.

So, here are my goals for the rest of the month:

1. Write 6500 words toward The Sundered Worlds

This goal was originally "finish The Sundered Worlds outline, part 1". However, I'm 75% of the way through that outline at the moment, and at the rate I'm writing, I might be done with the other 25% in a week. There are two other parts to The Sundered Worlds, and I'd like to get as far into those outlines as I can before the year ends.

2. Finish reading all the short stories/novellas/novelettes on my TBR list

I've made really good progress on this recently. Now that all the magazines I read have released their final issues for the year, I have a (hopefully) non-increasing number of stories to get through. I'm hoping at least some of them will end up on my final recommendations list of the year.

3. Reach 30 books read for the year

I'm very close to finishing book #29 (Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer). Just one more after that and I'll get to 30 for the year.

4. Watch the rest of the moves on my watch list

I know I said I didn't enjoy watching stuff, but there are some movies I do think I would benefit from watching. And, like the stories mentioned in #2, some have been on my watch list for months.

This is the goal I am least likely to accomplish, as there are 33 movies on my watch list and less than 33 days left in the year.

I'm now on book 21 for the year. I've decided to set my new goal at 30. I can easily read 3 books a month (4, if they're short books), so I should just barely be able to achieve this.

I'm excited! I didn't think I'd even read 12 books this year, let alone get to 20.

I just finished reading my 16th book of the year, so I'm updating my original goal of "read 12 books in 2025" to "read 20 books". At my current pace I might have to increase it again in a month or two (perhaps to 24 or 25), but 20 is sufficient for now.

I might end up increasing a few other of my previously completed goals as well, but I haven't made any decisions about that yet.

2025 Goals

I’m keeping my goals simple for 2025. If 2024 was a less-ambitious year than those preceding, 2025 will be even less ambitious.

Read 100 short stories. This was a super-easy goal to reach in 2024, so I’m sticking with it.

Read 12 books. I’ve still got quite a backlog to get through. One book per month should make something of a dent in it.

Watch 12 movies. I didn’t watch much of anything in 2024 – in fact, I didn’t even reach my movie goal – but 2024 was a pretty strange year with regards to watching stuff. I should be able to do this easily.

Complete 6 new video games. I’ve already figured out which games I want to play this year. Since there are no upcoming releases I’m looking forward to, I should stay on track with this goal.

Leave 100 comments. I didn’t get there in 2024, but I got closer than I have before! I really think I might be able to do this in 2025.

Write a total of 100,000 words. This works out to 8,400 words per month. Like in 2024, I’m counting all sorts of writing toward this.

Write 1 blog post per week. I want to get back into blogging instead of just posting recommendations and monthly overviews. I’ll go into further detail on Friday.

Create 26 pieces of art. This goal has been halved since I’m more likely to achieve it.

2024 in Review

I had some very simple goals for 2024. Some of those goals I achieved, some I didn’t. Here they are again, in detail:

Read 100 short stories. I ended up reading a little over 200 short stories, novelettes, and novellas. It was a very easy goal to surpass – that happened in August – and then I kept going, because I actually really like reading short fiction, and I wasn’t going to let some self-imposed goal get in the way of that.

Read 12 books. Most of these books were volumes of The Expanse: Dragon Tooth and Delicious in Dungeon, but there were two books in this category that I already owned. So, there was some progress in tackling my backlog.

Watch 12 movies. I ended up watching only 8. Television and film are not my preferred form of media, so this was always going to be difficult, but I spent very little time in 2024 watching anything.

Complete 6 new video games. After not gaming much in the first half of the year (but still completing Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and Max Payne), I went spent the entire second half of the year going through the entire Dragon Age series. I also wrote reviews for all of those games.

Leave 100 comments. I didn’t get there – I ended the year at 74, but I was definitely more sociable than in previous years.

Write 100,000 words. I did not even get close to this. 2024 was a bad year for writing. I ended the year at 52,832, which is a little better than my previous lowest year: 2008, where I wrote 49,996. For comparison: I wrote 98,259 in 2023.

Create 52 pieces of art. I didn’t get close to completing this one, either. I only got to 34. However, I did a ton of pixel art that I’m pretty proud of.

--

That’s not the only stuff I did in 2024. I left Wordpress and started blogging on Dreamwidth. I added a ton of my old Wordpress posts to Dreamwidth, and then later my artwork. I bought a domain name for my Neocities site and made it a real catalogue of my work through the years.

I also wrote ten reviews. Nine of those reviews are related to the video games I played in 2024, while the tenth is about a movie I watched.

I never expected to write that many reviews in one year – I wrote six in 2023, and I already thought that was a lot. I probably won’t be writing that many in 2025 or future years. Probably.

2024 was a very busy year in some ways, but disappointing in regards to my fiction writing. I’m hoping 2025 will be better with regards to that.

With one month – less than one month, at this point – left in the year, it’s time for me to make a mad scramble to get things done. There are a couple of things I’ve procrastinated on and a couple of things I’ve outright neglected, and I’d rather not bring them into 2025 with me.

Without further delay, my goals for the rest of December are:

1. Finish uploading my old Wordpress posts to Dreamwidth. I’ve already uploaded about half of these posts.

2. Finish playing the Alan Wake 2: Lake House DLC and write a review. I’m half-finished with both the DLC and the review. Neither will take very long to complete.

3. Finish playing Dragon Age: The Veilguard and write a review. I should be done with the game by the middle of the month. The “review” part of this goal may not happen in December; if it doesn’t, it will be posted in early January.

4. Finally finish the outline for Selegesine’s Shadow. I put this on hold in November so I could concentrate on writing. I want to actually get it done this month (I feel like I’ve said that every month for the past few months). Now is the time to work on getting all the information organized so I have one document to refer to.

5. Clear out my entire reading list. My backlog has grown quite large over the past few months as I’ve neglected reading. In addition to short stories and novellas, it now includes one novel (The Mercy of Gods) and a few volumes of manga (Delicious in Dungeon). There are currently two things in my October-December 2024 Recommendations list, and I’d like to have more.

2024 Goals

2024 is going to be a less-ambitious year, at least in comparison to the years preceding it. I'm sure I'll add more goals, but here are the ones I've come up with at the moment:

Read 100 short stories.
My goal for the previous few years has been 365 stories per year, but that's become less feasible over time. 100 is perfectly reasonable; it's 8-9 stories per month.

Read 12 books.
I have a large stack of paper books and an even larger stack of ebooks that I've been meaning to get to for the past few years. Cutting down on the number of short stories I read should mean I have more time for actual books.

Watch 12 movies.
There are a lot more than 12 on my watchlist, but 12 is a good place to start.

Complete 6 new video games.
This should be easy, especially if I focus on shorter games. I have quite a few unplayed games on Steam/GOG/Epic that I've obtained through sales over the years. I may just end up reviewing a few of them as well.

Leave 100 comments.
I've been trying to fix my problem with lurking for the past few years. It has actually improved, but not to the point I'd like. Thus this goal.

Write a total of 100,000 words.
I'm counting fiction, worldbuilding, plotting, outlining, nonfiction, and reviews in this.

Create 52 pieces of art.
This is the goal I'm probably least likely to complete, but it's something I want to at least try to accomplish.
